Rain, Labor and Harvest Windows: Why Growers Are Watching El Niño

Weather has always been one of the biggest variables in agriculture. For vegetable growers, a change in weather doesn’t simply affect what happens in the field. It can influence labor schedules, equipment availability, harvest timing, transportation, packing and ultimately how quickly fresh produce gets to market.
That is why El Niño is once again getting attention across the agricultural industry.
El Niño occurs when ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific become warmer than normal, influencing atmospheric circulation and weather patterns around the world. In California, El Niño is often associated with the possibility of wetter winter conditions, but the relationship is not as simple as “El Niño means more rain.” Each event is different, and rainfall can vary significantly depending on location and other atmospheric conditions.
For growers, however, preparing for that uncertainty is part of running the operation.
Rain Can Quickly Change a Harvest Plan
Vegetable production operates within relatively narrow windows. Crops need to be harvested when they reach the right stage, while crews, equipment, trucks and packing operations all need to be ready at roughly the same time.
Rain can disrupt that coordination quickly.
A field that was scheduled for harvest on Monday may not be accessible after several days of rain. Even after the weather clears, saturated soil can make it difficult to bring workers and heavy equipment back into the field immediately.
California growers have experienced this firsthand. Heavy rainfall and flooding in the Salinas Valley in 2023 inundated vegetable fields and disrupted planting schedules, demonstrating how quickly weather can affect an entire production cycle.
The challenge becomes even greater when several fields become workable again at approximately the same time. Instead of having a week or more to complete planned harvesting, growers may suddenly find themselves trying to accomplish the same amount of work within a much smaller window.
Weather Is Also a Labor and Logistics Issue
When a harvest schedule moves, everything around it moves too.
Crews may need to be rescheduled. Equipment has to be available. Trucks need to arrive at the right time. Packing and cooling operations need to adjust. Customers are still expecting product.
That is why weather uncertainty can quickly become an operational challenge rather than simply an agronomic one.
Labor availability becomes particularly important. A grower may have enough workers to support a normal harvest schedule, but if weather compresses several harvest days into a much shorter period, additional capacity can suddenly become difficult to find.
For specialty crops such as celery and leafy greens, where freshness and harvest timing are closely connected, that flexibility matters.
Making the Most of Every Workable Window
Growers cannot control El Niño, rainfall or how quickly a field dries after a storm. What they can control is how prepared their operation is when conditions allow harvesting to resume.
That means keeping equipment ready, maintaining flexibility in labor and logistics, and reducing avoidable downtime during the periods when the field is workable.
This is also where agricultural technology has an increasingly important role to play.
